[aaykarbhavan] CA ANJANA VIVEK

Anjana Vivek | Founder, Venturebean Consulting

She had a bit of her father in her. Her father held senior finance positions in companies including BHEL and HAL. And Anjana shared his love for mathematics and finance. So post a BSc in Physics from Delhi University, Anjana chose to do chartered accountancy (CA) in Bangalore. That defined much of her career - senior finance positions in Indian Telephone Industries (ITI), audit firm SB Billimoria & Co, and Ernst & Young, where she headed the due diligence practice in South India. She was also a faculty member in finance & control in IIM Bangalore between 2003 and 2005. But, as she says, a woman's career path is not the same as a man's. "You need to balance work and family." So there was a period of seven years, between 1993 and 2000, when she chose to do a flexi job, wherein she was associated with the Indian Venture Capital Association (IVCA). This was a time when venture capital was barely heard of. Anjana was the founder editor of IVCA's reports. She reviewed technology startups for investment, monitored and mentored assisted companies.

In 2002, this interest in the VC/startup space landed her in the position of COO at the NS Raghavan Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning at IIM, Bangalore. The centre was at that point just being established. Three years later, the same centre helped to incubate her own consulting company called VentureBean Consulting, and two years after that, she came out of the incubator to develop clients independently. "Today I provide business strategy, planning and operations support for startups and large corporates. I have two other directors, and we are the India partner for a Swedish consulting firm called Centigo," Anjana says.
