Subject: {Amresh's CA's} ICAI Council Elections 2015: Vote for Me!!

Being bombarded with hundreds of text messages, phone calls and emails over the last one month has finally taken its toll on me. I have decided to do what I hitherto could only think of doing: Contest the ICAI council elections! Before Amresh Vashisht and others start shivering in their boots, let me announce that I am not putting up my candidature for the 2012 elections. It's too late anyway. I am proposing myself as a central council candidate for the elections to be held in the year 2015.

After having consulted many seasoned professionals and based on my own ruminations, I am ready with my Poll Manifesto that I with the grace of Allah and the blessings of the members of this group hope I would be in a position to get implemented at the ICAI.

The following are the salient features of my Poll Manifesto:

Ø  CA Regulations would be appropriately amended to provide that the sons and daughters of the central council members who have been sitting in the central council for three consecutive terms be conferred the honorary title of "Chartered Accountant." Without having to go through the onerous task of sitting a gruelling exam (which some wag has nicknamed the "Come Again" exam) and undergo practical training of three years, all progenies of eligible council members over 21 years of age would be admitted directly into membership of the ICAI.

Contesting the central council elections and successfully getting elected three times in a row inevitably comes at a price. Your relationship with your family isn't anymore what it used to be when you were just another chartered accountant. I think nobody should have any issues if with a view to make up for the loss of familial amicability the offspring of council members are given honorary ICAI membership.

Ø  All of us council members would like but not all of us can actually become directors of nationalized banks or public sector companies. So what I propose is the ICAI float a company with banking as its main object and appoint all the central council members as the directors of that bank. Whosoever happens to be the President and the Vice-President of the ICAI would automatically become the Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the bank.

Ø  Right now we have a system of felicitation of the President and the Vice President of the ICAI. Branches across the country invite them over to their place, roll out the red carpet for them and present them with flower posies. I think not only the Prez and the VP, but all central council members be felicitated in this fashion. It is proposed to make it mandatory for all branches falling within the region where the central council member comes from to invite and felicitate the honourable member at the branch every year for the three years of his term.

Ø  CA exams are said to amongst the toughest in the country. To motivate the students not to give up and keep trying, as part of my Poll Manifesto, I would take it up with the Examination Committee of the ICAI to have skimpily-dressed imported cheerleaders to entertain CA students at exam centres across the country. Special podiums would be constructed at all the exam centres in order for the cheerleaders to shake a leg. To finance this innovative endeavour, I propose the exam fee be jacked up by 300%. I have spoken to many students. Nearly all of them thought it was a wonderful idea and the sooner it is implemented the better it would be.

Ø  Not all central council members have the gift of the gab. Not every one of the council members is able to persuade and cajole his colleagues in the council to vote for him as the Vice President of the ICAI. So with a view to bring about equality of opportunity, it is proposed that the present system of selection of the VP be dispensed with and replaced with the system prevalent in the IPL. The post of the VP will be publically auctioned and go to the highest bidder. The money so collected will be spent on the construction of a Centre of Excellence in the home town of the candidate for Vice Presidency.

Ø  The newspaper The Times of India be banned from the libraries of the ICAI and its branches.

It's still three years to go before Election-2015 arrives. I request all group members to consider my proposals and make suggestions for changes, if they have any.

Together we can and we will.

Your brother in arms,

Sanjeev Bedi, B Com, FCA, DISA (ICAI)

NB: The above work is a plagiarism. I stole the idea from an article published in the November 2012 issue of the online magazine "Auditor-Substance over Form" by the Society of Auditors, Chennai. A Chennai-based friend of mine had delivered the magazine in my inbox with a specific instruction to go through the particular article and share it with the group.
